Designing and Implementing Social Protection Programmes

A course for policy-makers, government officials and practitioners around the world

The Economic Policy Research Institute (EPRI) together with UNU-MERIT/Maastricht Graduate School of Governance and the Institute of Development Studies, are pleased to announce that registration is now open for 2018 course - Designing and Implementing Social Protection Programmes. The course will be held in Cape Town, South Africa from 6 - 17 August 2018.

About the course

Designing and Implementing Social Protection Programmes is a two-week course aimed at providing policy makers, government officials and practitioners with an in-depth understanding of the conceptual and practical issues involved in the design and implementation of social protection programmes. The course will be taught by a team of international experts and thought leaders in the field of social protection, allowing participants to engage with them and collaborate with a network of like-minded peers, in person. The course is jointly accredited by the UNU-MERIT-Maastricht Graduate School of Governance and EPRI. Learn more 

Course options 

The first week of the course covers the key topics in social cash transfers including the role of cash transfers, identification of appropriate instruments, design and implementation issues, and monitoring and evaluation approaches for social transfer programmes. Theme-oriented sessions and technical skills-building workshops are supported by practical case studies and field trips to see South Africa's social protection scheme in action.

Specialized topic modules (13 - 17 August 2017) 

During the second week, participants will choose one of several intensive, five-day modules on a specialized topic. Graduates of the past courses and/or people with extensive social protection experience can choose to attend one of these modules as a standalone course. Offerings may vary based on demand and enrollment numbers, but typical options include:
