March/April 2018
Introduction from CIC Director Julia Pirnack
Julia Pirnack

It’s almost moving day, and we have a lot to unpack with you.

If that got your attention, yes, CIC and CDHE are moving offices. See more on our move date and new location below. The move has forced us to go through our two storage rooms, and let’s say we’ve found some CIC classics! From life-size cardboard cutouts to corn hole boards, we have it all, reminding us of our rich history and the work we’ve done to assist all Coloradans to chart their futures.

Since our February publication, we have held nine individual calls with superintendents, counselors and other school personnel. We’ve also convened four focus groups with representatives from both K-12 and higher education. Thank you everyone who took the time to comment in person or via email. The feedback from these partners was instrumental as we drafted a request for information that went out last week. The RFI is the next step as the state embarks on a groundbreaking multiagency project that seeks to consolidate existing tools, resources and templates that help Coloradans plan for and navigate career and education choices, serving everyone from middle school students to adults. The RFI invites creative ideas on software or technology solutions and asks that respondents meet five core functionality goals:

1. Online, personalized career, education and training “Journey”
2. Highly engaging and interactive
3. Use of tools and activities from multiple agency/organization platforms
4. Individual, non-duplicated user portfolio
5. Professional collaboration and support

Responses are due April 30. Please share the RFI with vendors that may be interested in responding. Responses from the RFI will allow the multi-agency taskforce to make a decision on the future of CIC by June. The existing CIC website will remain available free to users through December 2018 and likely longer as funding solidifies. Please continue to send your comments and questions to me at

We're Moving this Month!
As a division of the Colorado Department of Higher Education, CIC will be moving offices effective April 23, 2018. Our new offices will be across the street in the Colorado State Bank and Trust Building, located at 1600 Broadway, Suite 2200, Denver, CO 80202. Our phone numbers and email addresses will remain the same.

College Friday is May 4, 2018
Dust off that old college t-shirt! College Friday promotes the importance of continuing education after high school and will take place May 4. People all over Colorado wear gear from their alma mater or favorite institution to start a dialogue and encourage young people to reach higher. College Friday resources are up on the website and more are being added daily. We also have some fantastic social media prizes again this year, so be sure to share your College Friday selfies tagging #CollegeFriday for a chance to win!

  • In the Colorado-Specific School Database, we’ve updated financial information for 52 schools with new resident tuition, non-resident tuition, fees, and combined room and board. This information also appears in Browse Schools,Compare Schools, School Finder and the College Matching Assistant.
  • The portfolio activity, My Goals and Action Plans, has been enhanced so it’s easier to use. It has also been renamed to Postsecondary and Workforce Goals.
  • Six activities available in the ICAP edit tool in the Professional Center have been renamed to clarify which portfolio activities they represent. Name changes are minor but important; for example, ‘Suggested Career Cluster’ to ‘Career Cluster Survey.’
  • A new, improved Individual Career and Academic Planning tracking report is available in Report Central and the Professional Center. Counselors and administrators can now select the assigned ICAP set and pages to generate reports, which are easier to scan and interpret results.
  • The Career Cluster Survey has been added to the list of activities available in the School-2-College-2-Work section in the ICAP edit tool in the Professional Center.

Read the Department’s Latest Blog

CDHE released the blog “Charting New Pathways with Certificates” which emphasizes other pathways in addition to four-year degrees, specifically short-term certificates. The blog interviews CDHE’s own Alex Creighton, who graduated from a coding boot-camp last year and now works as an application developer in the Data and Research Division and GEARUP.  Alex shared his experience earning his certificate and gave advice to students deciding between a four-year degree and a credential like his.

Monthly Testimonials

We’re hearing good things and we want to share them! Look for user testimonials each month and let us know if you have a story to share!

“We are very focused on ICAP and planning for the future of our students and are extremely excited to see how CIC evolves in the next few months. We rely heavily on the resources CIC provides to our students and love that there may be even more for them with the newly developed product. Programs which let students explore in a structured environment are rare but are often more effective than presentations, etc., so the anticipation is high!”

-Donna Aragon, guidance counselor, Fowler School District
