| | | | Cooling: Trends from 9 Key African Markets
In 2017, 2.8 million ACs were sold in Africa, on the heels of two years of 6-8% market growth. As demand for ACs grows, policymakers are looking to energy efficiency policies as a key component of sustainable cooling efforts.
CLASP’s Africa Air Conditioner Market Scoping Study provides an initial overview of AC market sizes and characteristics, a crucial step in filling the information gap faced by policymakers, while also drawing attention to the larger market characteristics and policy gaps that future market assessments could address. In September, we're hosting a webinar on the study. Register here.
This is just one component of our work to increase the update of affordable, low-impact, high quality appliances and cut catastrophic climate impacts of ACs. | | | | Quality-Verified Products Perform Better
A recent Lighting Global analysis demonstrates that a rigorous quality assurance framework – including product testing and quality standards – remains essential to the health of the off-grid market.
The Lighting Global Quality Assurance program tested 17 top-selling, non-quality verified solar products from retail stores in Ethiopia, Kenya, Myanmar, Nigeria, and Tanzania. All 17 tested products failed to meet LGQA standards for pico-PV products.
Results indicate that non-quality verified products break more often, more quickly, and for a variety of reasons, undermining consumer confidence and market health.
