7 Tips for Attracting and Retaining Great Talent

Building a talented team

If you've been in business any amount of time you likely understand the challenges that come with attracting and retaining top talent, you might even struggle to find the right people to fill open positions in your company.

In today's competitive business environment, building a great culture and hiring rockstars that fit your company's culture are important to building a profitable business. These take a lot of intentional thought and effort but with the right people on your team you’ll likely find yourself with the competitive advantage. Today, we're sharing 7 tips for attracting and retaining the right talent.

Growing and building a successful business starts with attracting really great people to your team.

1. The hiring process

Hiring amazing people starts with the framework you use to get those people on your team. Developing the right hiring process will save you time, protect people’s emotions and ensure that the people you are hiring are a great fit for your company. Donald Miller, CEO of Storybrand, shares an overview of their six step hiring process and offers some helpful tips for creating your own.

2. Cleary describe your company culture and what you are looking for

During the interview process, clearly articulate what it is you’re are looking for and what success in the role looks like. This will help ensure that this is exactly what your interviewee wants to do. Be clear about your company culture and the dynamics that you want your team to have and don’t compromise on it.

3. Encourage your current employees to recruit people that they know

Now that you’ve hired rockstar employees, one of the easiest ways to find new talent is to ask your current employees for recommendations. Your staff is your biggest advocate for what it's like to work at your company. They know what a right-fit for your team looks like so utilize them to put you in contact with their network of professional friends.

 Attract and Retain

Now that you've attracted the right talent, how do you retain your team of really amazing people?

4. Recognition

Of the 1/3 of Americans who are looking for a new job, 43% say that lack of recognition is one of their main reasons for unhappiness. Simple and sincere recognition demonstrated in ways that motivate and inspire your team can make a big impact. Make a habit of recognizing your team and letting them know they're doing a good job. Regular team lunches, email blasts to the entire team, gift cards and short handwritten thank you notes are great places to start.

5. Communication

Communication is key to keeping your employees happy. Every single person on your team should feel like they can come talk to you no matter the issue. As a leader, it’s your responsibility to create a safe environment where your employees feel like they can share their feelings honestly without fear of recourse.

6. Share your why

Another way to keep your team engaged and happy is to share the why behind what you do. It can be helpful for employees to know that their everyday actions matter to the bigger picture. Let your team know that what they do is important. Leadership expert, Simon Sinek, calls this your “golden circle”. He says that it's not enough for most people to know what they do and how to do it. At our core, humans are motivated by knowing why we do things. And he says, that awareness is how we can best connect and sell to others. The more you can give your employees a sense of purpose, the more they will preform to capacity because they will want to see your why to completion.

7. Treat them like family

Genuine care and concern for your employees is important especially when things get really busy at the office. When you treat your employees with kindness, respect, and dignity, they’ll act like family. In a recent interview, Bob Chapman, author of the book, Everyone Matters talks about the power of caring for your people as they're your family, he said, “Leadership is the stewardship of the precious lives that come to you by people walking through your door and agreeing to share their gifts with you…[Those who] worked for us are not accountants and secretaries and engineers and sales people; they are somebody’s precious child whom you are a steward of. How you exercise that stewardship will profoundly affect that life….But when you look at somebody as somebody’s precious child that you have a chance to impact, it profoundly changes the way you view these people. They are no longer a function for your success. They are a precious, precious person who simply wants to know that who they are and what they do matters.”
