2018 General Assembly meeting: focus on the social cohesion aspect of urban security policies
Some 80 delegates representing about 50 member cities attended Efus' General Assembly meeting in Liege (BE), city which is president of the association, on 14 and 15 May. Apart from the GA itself, delegates had the opportunity to take part in several field visits, as well as in a seminar on “the city of tomorrow” and a presentation of the security component of the European Union's “Urban Innovative Actions” initiative. Delegates also discussed Efus' activity in 2017 and the results of the November 2017 “Security, Democracy and Cities” conference. ...

Medi@4sec 4th workshop: the policing of trolling, hate, and lies online
What can and should be done to prevent trolling? What methods of disruption are available/desirable? How can action against trolling be enforced? Prevention of discriminatory violence: a new working group open to all Efus members
Efus has set up a working group on discriminatory violence based on the principle that urban security is a common good that must be founded on the respect of human rights. Open to all interested members, this group will offer the opportunity to exchange knowledge, strategies and practices, benefit from online trainings and contribute to designing recommendations aimed at the whole network. ...

Partnership between Efus and Canada: cross visits on the role of local authorities in crime prevention and social cohesion
As part of its regular exchanges with Canadian cities, Efus was invited to the annual conference of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, held in Halifax from 31 May to 2 June. About 2,000 local elected officials from all over Canada took part in this conference, whose theme was “tools for tomorrow”. Shortly afterwards, Efus and the French Forum (FFSU) organised a debate in Paris together with the embassy of Canada on the theme “Inclusive urban security policies: the Canadian experience of safer cities for all”. ...
The ALARM project on cross border cooperation on civil security between France and Belgium holds its first seminar for local elected officials
The ALARM project, which is carried out as part of the EU's Interreg programme for territorial cooperation between France, Wallonia and Flanders, held its first seminar for local elected officials at the headquarters of the European Metropolis of Lille (EML, FR), on 17 May. The main topic of this meeting, which gathered about a hundred local elected officials from both sides of the border, was the involvement and responsibilities of mayors and burgomasters in ensuring civil security. ...
Cities in the face of digital money and illicit financial flows: “Flying Money” conference in Amsterdam
How to detect and counter financial crime based on digital currencies and blockchain technology? This was the theme of the “Flying Money - Investigating illicit financial flows in the city” conference organised by the city of Amsterdam (NL), a member of Efus, in partnership with the University of Applied Sciences of Amsterdam, on 22-24 May. Efus was in attendance, represented by the Government of Catalonia (ES) and the city of Rotterdam (NL), both vice president of the association, as well as by the city of Malmö (SE) and the Emilia Romagna region (IT), both Executive Committee members. ...
Training social mediators by exchanging practices throughout Europe: Call for applications for the 2019 Tour Around Europe
Efus is a partner in the European CreE.A project for the promotion of social mediation in Europe through the exchange of knowledge among professionals. We are inviting member local authorities to take part in the fourth ArleKin Tour Around Europe! Over the course of 12 days, social mediators will work with a “teaching master” from a mediation organisation based in a different European country from theirs. This is a unique and innovative training inspired by the century-old tradition of the “Tour de France des Compagnons” (the craftsmen's tour of France). ...

The result of a collective effort undertaken on the occasion of Efus' international conference in Barcelona, in November 2017, the “Security, Democracy and Cities” Manifesto is now available online and in print on request. It expresses Efus' principles and values and includes practical recommendations concerning 12 areas of urban security. A must for all Efus members! ...
